When Tools Become Masters

WARM WELCOME - Open the conversation.

What's one piece of technology that makes your life dramatically better—and one that probably makes your life dramatically worse?

DEVOTIONAL - How did this week’s devotionals impact you?

How could technology help or hinder you in pursuing the type of connection with other people that’s described in the early church?

Give an update to one another how you have been adjusting your technology usage this past week. What did your weekly Tech Inventory reveal?

DISCUSS - Enjoy a good conversation using the questions below as a guide - (🔥Deeper Question)

Read Galatians 6:4–5. How does Paul's teaching about examining our own lives challenge the comparison that technology encourages?

Read 1 Corinthians 6:12: “I will not be mastered by anything.” What technology-related behavior has the potential to master you?

Technology has made porn, shopping, gambling, and financial speculation incredibly accessible. What is different about temptation when you can act on it instantly from your phone?

What is technology currently stealing from you that you have become so accustomed to losing that you've stopped fighting for it?🔥

PRACTICE - Ask, “What is one way that you will put scripture into practice this week?”

Choose a day or a couple of hours to completely disconnect from your phone & other screens.

Over the next week, spend five minutes every day in silence. Practice taking deep breaths and connecting with God.

Choose a verse to memorize next week. You might start with Matthew 11:28-30.

Give your phone a bedtime and let it charge overnight in a different room. Notice if your sleep changes and whether or not you engage with your phone differently throughout the day.

Turn off all unnecessary notifications. Throughout the week, be mindful of how often you check your phone out of habit rather than necessity.

PRAY - Spend 30 minutes sharing, praying, and holding one another accountable.
