Beyond Stories: Finding Family Among Strangers

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
— Hebrews 11: 13-16

What started as a small yes, God grew into something greater. As a busy parent, navigating naptimes and mastering the occasional meltdown, Sarah offers what she has to make serving others a steady heartbeat for the life of her family.

When Sarah first learned about World Relief, something in her heart stirred. She didn’t have an abundance of time, but simply had the desire to help - and the Lord used it. With a degree in linguistics and a passion to be the hands and feet of Jesus, Sarah’s journey helping refugee families across Rochester began.

Arriving at the World Relief offices, Sarah wasn’t sure what to expect but quickly learned that showing up in service isn’t complicated; it's a relationship. It’s about making yourself available, trusting God to move in the lives of His children. The students were not strangers, but a part of families just like her own, navigating hardship with hope for something greater.

Somehow, in the midst of chaotic moments and a busy schedule, Sarah began to make serving a priority. Beside her at lessons sits her daughter, naturally opening doors for connection and conversations while acting as a reminder that service in the Kingdom is for all ages!

Sarah knows that language is power, and it leads to independence for families that are just like her own. Her work echoes the truth found in Hebrews 11, that we are all strangers here, waiting for our Heavenly home to come. At World Relief, Sarah is helping refugees feel seen as she keeps her eyes fixed on eternity.
